How to Buy Crypto Not Listed on Coinbase (US Guide)
Check the other US exchanges first. Kraken lists more coins than Coinbase, and a coin missing from both may still be on Crypto.com or Binance.US. If no US exchange has it, you can still buy it on-chain: buy the network's gas coin on Coinbase, send it to your own wallet, then swap it on a decentralized exchange (DEX). That second route is common. When we checked in October 2026, 40% of the top 500 coins by market cap weren't on any of the six US exchanges we track.
Is the coin on another US exchange?
Search the coin on Lasso. Each US exchange that lists it gets its own buy button, so you can see the options at a glance. To compare the exchanges themselves, see which crypto exchange has the most coins.
No buttons means the coin trades on-chain, usually on a DEX. The rest of this guide covers that route.
- Buy the gas coinOn Coinbase
- Send to your walletSame network
- Swap on a DEXPaste the address
Find the real contract address
On-chain, a token is identified by its contract address, not its name or ticker. Scammers launch copycat tokens with the same name every day, and inside a swap app they look identical. Copy the address from a source you trust, like the coin's page on Lasso or CoinGecko or the project's official site, and check it again at every step.
Also note the network the token lives on, such as Solana, Ethereum, Base or BNB Smart Chain. Lasso shows it on each coin page, along with a buying route for that network.
Step 1: Buy the gas coin on Coinbase
Each network charges fees in its own coin. Solana tokens need SOL. Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum tokens need ETH, and BNB Smart Chain tokens need BNB. Coinbase lists all of these as of our latest check, but before you buy, confirm the send screen offers the network you need. Buy a bit more than you plan to swap, since fees come out of the same balance.
Step 2: Send it to your own wallet on the right network
Install a self-custody wallet for that network: Phantom for Solana, or MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet for Ethereum-style networks. Write the recovery phrase down and store it offline. Never type it into a website, because anyone who has it controls your wallet.
Next, withdraw from Coinbase to your wallet address. This is where people lose money. Pick the same network your wallet uses. Coinbase warns that funds sent on the wrong network are lost and that it can't retrieve them. Send a small test amount, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest.

Step 3: Swap on a DEX
Open a DEX for the network: Jupiter on Solana, Uniswap on Ethereum, Base or BNB Smart Chain, or PancakeSwap on BNB Smart Chain. Connect your wallet and swap the gas coin for the token. The buying guide on each Lasso coin page links to the swap with the contract address already filled in. Before you confirm, make sure that address matches the one you checked.
Start small. A thinly traded token can move several percent on a single order, and the app shows this as "price impact".
What can go wrong
- Copycat tokens. Only buy the exact address you verified, and ignore tokens that appear in your wallet uninvited.
- Thin liquidity. If a token trades a few thousand dollars a day, you may not be able to sell at the price you see, or at all. Lasso flags coins with very low volume.
- Wrong network. Funds sent on the wrong network often can't be recovered.
- No undo. On-chain transactions can't be reversed, and there's no support desk to call.
- Fees. Ethereum mainnet usually costs more per transaction than Solana or Base, and fees there rise quickly when the network is busy, which hurts small buys.
The IRS treats crypto as property, and you must report sales and exchanges of one digital asset for another, so selling or swapping is generally a taxable event. Keep records of every trade.
Find the route for your coin
Search it on Lasso. You'll see US exchange buy buttons if any exist, or these steps filled in for the coin's network, with links to the right wallet and DEX. For meme coins specifically, see how to buy meme coins in the US.
