How to Swap Tokens on Jupiter (Solana Guide)

Jupiter (jup.ag) is a widely used place to swap tokens on Solana. It compares prices across Solana's exchanges and other liquidity sources and routes your trade for the best price it finds. To swap, open jup.ag, connect a Solana wallet like Phantom, choose SOL as what you're selling, paste the token's mint address as what you're buying, enter an amount and confirm in your wallet. The swap usually settles in seconds. Solana network fees are small, Jupiter charges its own swap fee on most trades (0.1% for most pairs in its default Ultra mode, more for very new tokens), and the first time you buy a token a little extra SOL may go to a deposit for its token account. The swap screen shows the details before you confirm.

What you need

  • A Solana wallet with some SOL in it. New to this? Start with how to set up a Phantom wallet.
  • The token's mint (contract) address, verified from a trusted source
  1. Open jup.agType it yourself
  2. Connect walletPhantom
  3. Pick tokensSOL to the token
  4. Check and swapImpact, then confirm

Step-by-step

  1. Go to jup.agType the address or use a bookmark, and double-check the URL. Don't follow links from ads, replies or DMs.
  2. Connect your walletClick Connect Wallet at the top right and choose Phantom (or your wallet). Approve the connection in the wallet pop-up. Connecting only shares your address; it doesn't move funds.
  3. Set what you sell and what you buySet the top token to SOL. In the bottom field, paste the token's mint address instead of searching by name. Check that the logo, name and address match what you verified.
  4. Enter the amount and read the quoteJupiter shows how many tokens you'll get, the rate and the price impact. Price impact is how much your own order moves the price. The bigger your order compared with the token's liquidity, the bigger the impact.
  5. Swap and confirm in your walletClick Swap, read the wallet pop-up and approve. The new token appears in your wallet within seconds.

Price impact and slippage, in plain English

Price impact is the price change caused by your own trade. A big order in a small pool pushes the price up, so you get fewer tokens. If the impact is several percent, try a smaller amount.

Slippage is how far the price is allowed to move between your click and the trade settling. In Jupiter's default Ultra mode it's set automatically for each swap. If you switch to Manual mode and set it yourself, too low can make the trade fail and too high can get you a worse price, and Manual mode has no protection against bots trading around you.

If Jupiter shows that a token is unverified or has very low liquidity, take it seriously. Anyone can create a token with any name, and some tokens let their creator freeze transfers or pull the liquidity. You may be able to buy and not be able to sell.

How to sell back to SOL

Do the same thing in reverse: put the token on top and SOL on the bottom. To cash out to dollars, send SOL back to your exchange on the Solana network and sell it there.

Risks to know

The IRS treats crypto as property, and swapping one crypto for another generally means a capital gain or loss to report. Keep a record of what you paid and received.

Find the token's route

Search any Solana coin on Lasso. If no US exchange lists it, the coin page links to Jupiter with the mint address already filled in.
